The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for infants and toddlers with special needs.

Through the Early Intervention Program (EIP) a multidisciplinary evaluation is offered at no out-of-pocket expense to families who have concerns about any aspect of their child's development. Eligibility for the EIP can only be determined by State approved evaluators under contract with the municipality.

If you have concerns about your child’s development you can call the county in which you reside to refer your child. To access the Early Intervention Program for Nassau County you can call (516) 227-8661. To access the Early Intervention Program for Suffolk County you can call (631) 853-2318.

Our early intervention coordinators are also available to assist you with the process. You can call (631) 473-4284 ext  114, to connect with a coordinator.

NYTPS is approved by New York State Department of Health to provide the following Early Intervention Services. (If services are provided in a community setting that requires a fee, the parent is responsible for paying those costs.)

  • Ongoing Service Coordination
  • Core and Supplemental Evaluation
  • Home/community/facility based visits
  • Parent child groups
  • Group developmental Intervention
  • Family/caregiver support groups

The Early Intervention Program is funded and regulated by the NYS Department of Health in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. All services are provided at no out of pocket cost to families but health insurance may be accessed.

What is Typical Development?

Typical Development describes the physical, mental & social development of a child who is acquiring skills according to the expected time frame. A child who is developing in a healthy way pays attention to the voices, faces & actions of others, showing & sharing pleasure during interactions, and engaging in verbal and nonverbal back-and-forth communication.

What are Developmental Milestones?

Developmental milestones are skills gained by a developing child, which should be achieved by a given age. Failure to achieve a particular milestone by a given age may be indicative of developmental delay.

*It is important to remember that children are individuals and develop at different rates. This information should be used as a general guide for your child’s development.
